Captain Robert Orr Welcomes You!

On behalf of the Captain Robert Orr Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR), we welcome you! Our chapter was organized in 1977 to serve the Brainerd Lakes area.  Our members come from 13 counties in central Minnesota.

We are a non-profit, non-political women’s service organization that values education, historic preservation, and patriotism.

About Our Chapter

The Captain Robert Orr Chapter, NSDAR, meets in Brainerd and our members include women from 13 counties in central Minnesota. We serve the community in several ways including; tombstone cleaning, volunteering at veterans activities, sending items to troops overseas, donating items to the Veterans Administration (VA), donating to education funds and awarding scholarships. We also support projects at Northland Arboretum and local women’s shelters.

We Promote Historic Preservation, Patriotism, and Education

Our chapter supports national and state historic preservation projects as well as supports our community in the preservation of historical artifacts.

Our chapter supports national and state patriotism projects as well as supports our local veterans and hosts celebratory events such as the 4th of July and Veterans Day.

Our chapter supports national and state education projects as well as works with our community through our projects to support education via scholarships and educational events.

We Make a Difference in Our Communities

Historic Preservation

Our chapter is passionate about preserving our local veterans’ memories. One way we do this is by visiting local cemeteries and cleaning tombstones so that visitors may see whom they are honoring and their sacrifice for our country.

Patriotism

Our chapter participates in many activities to promote patriotism.  Notably, we have planted a Never Forget Garden at Northland Arboretum and maintain a garden at the All Veterans Memorial in Brainerd. Wreaths Across America and Wreaths for the Fallen at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls are annual events supported by our chapter. Assisting at the veterans’ clinics, distributing flags and copies of the constitution as well as being a partner in the 50th Anniversary honoring Vietnam veterans are ongoing projects.

Education

Each year our chapter donates supplies to local schools, supports literacy by participating in reading programs at local libraries and donates books to libraries. We sponsor the American History essay contest for grades five through eight. Chapter winners have gone on to win at the state level, north-central division level and one national winner. High school students write about a Patriot and their importance to the American Revolutionary War. We sponsor the DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest open only for high school seniors.

Become a Member of DAR

Today’s Daughters of the American Revolution is a vibrant service organization for women over the age of 18 who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolutionary War. In October 2019, DAR surpassed one million women who have joined the DAR since its founding in 1890. By subscribing to the DAR Today podcast, you can learn more about members’ activities, Patriot histories, current topics and more.

Minnesota Daughters come from all over our great state, and beyond. They are young women who join to honor a family member, older women who enjoy genealogical research in their retirement years, professional women interested in connecting with other women in the community where they live, and others. Whatever your reason for joining, we invite you to connect, encourage you to apply, and welcome you to our organization.
